Become A Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer is simple and lots of fun! Just remember - you don't have to give up every spare moment you have, so, you can even volunteer if you have a busy schedule! Joining a large group is the best way to ensure your success as a volunteer. Not only are there others of whom you can ask questions, but they can fill in when you can't make it to an event. It is very easy to fit volunteering into your schedule, because You decide which events you will attend!

Meeting new people is only one of the perks of being part of a volunteer group. Making new friends and belonging to a group of positive people always makes for such a fun occasion! Being social with a busy schedule is nearly impossible; but this way, you can meet new people, be social and help others in need- all at the same time!

You also have the chance to get that "feel good" feeling that always appears when you do something for someone else. Giving really is receiving! Just think, you could give your effort when it's convenient for you, and at the same time- you can give back to those who need you & support our community, as well! What a bargain! For such a small contribution, you get a social network, to help those in need, and you get to support our community!

If all of this sounds fun, easy & exciting to you, then please take a moment to join one  a group of volunteers, like the Little Rock Volunteers, simply click on the button above, or, if you jus want to attend an individual volunteer event, click on the button of one of the worthy causes in which you are interrested  (listed above) - it's that easy!

We are so glad that you took the time to visit us today and we hope that this page was helpful to you! We look forward to seeing & meeting you, should you decide to join in on the great adventure of volunteering!

For more than one-third of America that live in rural areas, public transportation makes all the difference in getting a job, going to school or getting to the local store to buy medicine.

CADC’s Public Transportation Service is an important tool in keeping families mobile and giving them access to the resources in their community that will keep them independent.  The South Arkansas Transit or SCAT program works to connect to affordable public transportation in 11 of CADCs service area counties, to include Saline County.

SCAT public transportation saves households over $1,399 worth of gas each year.  The service reduces the need for an additional car, a yearly expense that can cost household budgets at least $6,251 a year.

Public transportation is available to anyone, regardless of income.

Come join the wonderful world of giving back & helping the homeless & those without transportation with this opportunity- you won't regret it! To join, simply click on the image to the right, or the "S.C.A.T." button (above) to be taken to the (C.A.D.C.) Central Arkansas Development Council site & fill out the form to become a S.C.A.T. driver. Be sure to put "S.C.A.T. Driver" in the subject line of the form.

Our House was incorporated in September of 1987 following two years of study into the ever-growing problems of the homeless in Central Arkansas. The study, which was conducted by the Arkansas Conference of Churches and Synagogues (the Arkansas Interfaith Conference), the United Way of Pulaski County, and other interested community agencies, determined that the greatest need was to find shelter for homeless families. Two shelters in Little Rock offered only short-term stays for individuals, with no place for families to stay together and no assistance with long-term needs and planning. Our House set out to fill this gap and to meet the needs of Central Arkansas's working homeless population.

Realizing that housing alone was not enough to help families out of homelessness, Our House has always focused on providing other essential services to help give homeless families the skills and support they need to turn their lives around. In 1991, Our House began its job skills training programs, with an initial focus on training for computer jobs. The computer job training program was launched with the donation of $250,000 worth of computer equipment from IBM, and it was the first such program for homeless people in the nation.  Also in 1991, Our House began providing free childcare to take care of homeless children while their parents work full-time jobs.

Our House is currently equipped with:

  •  80 beds

  • outdoor picnic area

  • playground

  • Family Housing

  • free clinic for uninsured low-income people (located across the street)

  • job skills traing

  • connections with the public transit system, mental health facilities, colleges & many other necessities
